Welcome to Coker Wimberly Elementary School. I am your Assistant Principal, Melonee Hunter.  I firmly believe in life-long learning. After serving in the US Army, I graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree in School Health Education.  I received a Master’s in Middle Grades Science from Walden University. I earned my second Master’s Degree in School Administration from High Point University. I am currently a doctoral candidate at Walden University.

During my 11 years in education, I taught 9th-grade Health Education and Earth/Environmental Science in Halifax County Schools, 6th and 8th grade science in Nash-Rocky Mount Schools, and 7th-grade science in Vance County Schools.  In 2012, I received the Middle School Teacher of the Year from Nash-Rocky Mount Schools. Each of these experiences provided opportunities for me to grow as an instructional and distributive leader.

I am committed to Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM)  Project-Based Learning programs and I am a zSpace Virtual Reality Site Champion.  I was instrumental in securing partnerships with North Carolina Central University B.R.I.T.E. program, and North Carolina A & T University Young Scientists and Engineers program.  As the STEM Career Club Site Coordinator, I continue to foster a strong relationship with North Carolina State University by participating in various STEM-related activities that they sponsor.  These experiences allow me to ensure that rigorous STEM-related practices take place in every classroom.

I am a proponent of empowerment whether it is through leadership or through service to others.  I believe that good leaders make future leaders and that service to others yields humility. In 1994, I formed a 501(c) non-profit organization to provide computer and communication instruction for welfare recipient mothers.   In my spare time, I mentor elementary and middle school girls through a nationally recognized program within the Les Gemmes, Inc. civic organization.  I also facilitate a STEM component to high school students through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. ASCEND program. It is through these efforts that I strive to empower young people, their parents, and the community.

The most important role in my life is being a wife, mother, and grandmother.  My husband, a school counselor, and I have three children, Mark, Christopher, and Kaelah.  We have five grandchildren, Imani, Naomi, Taliyah, Cielo, and Donovan.

It is my pleasure to serve the Mighty Dolphins of Coker-Wimberly Elementary School!
