📢 Attention 3rd Grade Families!
Your third grader received a letter explaining North Carolina's Read to Achieve requirements. This law mandates that students demonstrate reading proficiency to advance to the 4th grade.
The letter outlines five ways your child can meet this requirement and what happens if additional support is needed. Please review the letter carefully and contact your child’s teacher with any questions.

Greetings Dolphin Families!
I am thrilled to announce our upcoming "One Community, One School, One Book" initiative, featuring the beloved novel Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo! From December 2nd to December 19th, our entire school community—students, staff, and families—will embark on a shared reading journey. This initiative aims to foster a love for reading, build comprehension skills, and strengthen our school community. All students received a copy of this novel and we will begin read-alouds tomorrow.
Why Because of Winn-Dixie?
This heartwarming story of friendship, kindness, and community aligns beautifully with our school’s mission of developing lifelong learners who build strong relationships and act with agency.
By reading this book together, we aim to:
Promote literacy and comprehension skills.
Spark meaningful conversations at school and at home.
Unite our school and families around a shared literary experience.
How It Works
Each week, we will focus on specific chapters, supported by fun activities and engaging questions. Families are encouraged to read together, discuss the story, and participate in optional at-home projects. Teachers will incorporate themes and questions into class discussions to deepen comprehension.
Reading Schedule
Week 1 (Dec. 2-6): Chapters 1-5
Focus: Introduction to Opal and Winn-Dixie, building character understanding.
Week 2 (Dec. 9-13): Chapters 6-15
Focus: Themes of friendship and community.
Week 3 (Dec. 16-19): Chapters 16-End
Focus: Resolution and reflection on lessons learned.
Together, we can create a memorable experience that inspires a lifelong love of reading. Thank you for your partnership in making this initiative a success. We look forward to hearing all the wonderful insights and stories your children will share!
Welcome Back from Thanksgiving Break!
